Montgomery is the capital of Alabama. A nine-member council and mayor elected to four-year terms direct its municipal affairs. The city is located in Montgomery County, governed by the five-member Montgomery County Commission. Its members are also elected to four-year terms. Montgomery Public Schools is a county-wide system led by a seven-member elected Board Of Education.

The birthplace of civil aviation, Montgomery is the site of Maxwell Air Force Base, which dates back to the Wright brothers' flying school of 1910. The base is home to more than 12,500 active-duty, reserve, civilian and contractor personnel, as well as Air University, the worldwide center for Air Force education.

Montgomery is located in the Central time zone.

In 1910, the Wright Brothers established the nation’s first civilian school for powered flight in Montgomery at a site that would later become Maxwell Air Force Base.
